Our assessment: The Department of Human Reproduction (Unit of In Vitro Fertilization and Cryopreservation Bank) began operations in 1996 and is the only unit in the Greek National Health System (ESY) and a pilot unit for other public units created later. It is one of the largest public departments of its kind in Greece. In January 2017, the department relocated to new, modern facilities in accordance with current legislation regarding the terms and conditions for operating Medically Assisted Reproduction Units and Cryopreservation Banks. It is among the first public departments to be certified according to ISO 9001:2008 and EN 15224:2012 and licensed by the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction (Government Gazette 2837 & 2864). The department is staffed with well-trained personnel in assisted reproduction, with the sole objective of providing friendly, confidential, reliable, valid and effective treatment of infertile couples. Services provided cover the entire field of assisted reproduction including: ovulation induction, controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, intrauterine sperm insemination, semen analysis and sperm separation test, in vitro fertilization, microinsemination (ICSI, TESE), and cryopreservation of oocytes, sperm, testicular tissue and embryos. The department also collaborates with the Miscarriage Clinic/Center and the Immunology-Histocompatibility Department to address cases of couples with repeated failed IVF attempts and other infertility problems through comprehensive diagnostic immunological testing.
